ESTRA Meets with Governor’s Representatives to Continue Awareness of “Move Over” Law
Albany, NY (November 14, 2016) – ESTRA’s President, Thomas Brennan, ESTRA attorney and legislative lobbyist, Peter O’Connell, member, Warren Roosevelt, Jr., and ESTRA staff met with representatives of the Governor’s office to discuss various topics pertaining to the towing industry in New York State. The discussion focused on how ESTRA and State agencies can work together on continuing efforts to educate the public on safe driving and the “Move Over” law.
Additionally, we discussed the process to allow rear facing blue lights to be added to tow trucks and the possibility of increasing the fines and penalties for violating the “Move Over” law. We will continue to address these issues through the legislative process.
The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) of New York coordinates statewide traffic safety issues to help protect our roadways and all who work on them through education and awareness. The “Move Over” law, “Don’t Drink and Drive”, “Stay Awake” and “Don’t Text and Drive” campaigns also help reduce fatalities and injuries to all roadside workers by reducing impaired and distracted driving. These are leading causes of accidents, injuries and deaths of roadside workers.
Despite these ongoing efforts there is an urgent need for increased awareness. To address this need the Committee has filmed a new PSA and the Governor has announced a week-long campaign beginning November 14th to promote awareness of the “Move Over” law. The NYS Thruway will begin a four-day campaign where emergency and hazard vehicles will be at rest stops throughout the State and awareness literature will be distributed by responders. Roadside VMS boards will be utilized to remind drivers of the importance of moving over.
We look forward to continued discussions and collaboration with the Governor’s Office, State agencies and authorities, and the Legislature to enact additional safety measures to benefit the men and women working on New York State roads. ESTRA will continue to work with the Governor’s representatives to keep the educational process moving forward as the failure to obey the “Move Over” law leads to devastating consequences.
